Research Assistant, computer science (Sustainable Automation - Machine learning)

This is a fixed-term position for eight months starting at the beginning of December 2020 or as agreed. The position is located in the School of Technology and Innovations, team of computer science:

Your role

The tasks of the Research assistant are mainly focused on work done in ongoing Nordic research project NoICE – Establishing a competence center on atmospheric icing related issues, funded by Bothnia Atlantica. The work will focus mainly on machine learning methods to observe atmospheric icing in forests using multi-spectral satellite images but may also include other relevant machine learning cases.

Your tasks will include assisting the analysis of satellite images and testing various machine learning algorithms together with other researchers and write report of the findings. This position provides excellent opportunity to learn machine learning methods, satellite image processing and reporting.

All tasks are agreed in more detail in the Annual Work Plan. The annual working time for the Research Assistant is 1612 hours. 

Your experience

Position suits best for students who are already approaching to the end of their studies. Those already graduated are also taken into account. The applicants are expected to have studies in the appropriate subjects including automation and computer science, and good programming skills. Good mathematical background, and experience in machine learning, AI and signal processing are considered useful. The work will be done mainly using Python with relevant libraries.

The salary will be based on both the job requirement and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The monthly salary of a research assistant is based on job demand level 1 (1869 €). An additional personal salary component is paid based on work performance.
