The University of Vaasa is implementing its research-focused strategy, centred around a 10 million Euro investment programme. We are building up our research capabilities by opening up to 20 new Tenure Track positions. Our future-oriented investments will create a highly dynamic and supportive research environment. These Tenure Track positions will offer successful applicants an excellent opportunity to build up a multifaceted academic career.

We are now inviting applications primarily for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor (Tenure Track) in Innovation Policy. However, applicants for the position of Professor may also be considered. The level of appoinment depends on the merits and career stage of the applicant.

Task description

Innovation policies seek to drive and provide incentives for continuous renewal in both the private and public sectors. However, recent developments towards transformative and mission-driven innovation policies have created challenges in how innovation policy can help to address complex societal issues. Furthermore, the digital economy and digital product/service innovations are changing the way we think and do business and thus the way business innovations need to be defined and supported.

The scope of the research profile is to integrate research on digital transformation in and across different sectors including the social and environmental agenda, and innovation policy. The research explores the potential and implications of phenomenon-based and challenge-driven innovation policy. This kind of multidisciplinary research will strengthen and broaden the existing research on triple helix relations, smart specialisation, and European innovation policy at the University of Vaasa.

The expected areas of expertise and interests can include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Innovation ecosystems and Quadruple Helix development (industry, academia, government, citizens) in a multi-level context (regional, national, transnational, EU and global)
  • Knowledge production for innovations based on scientific research, the practices of quadruple helix actors and citizen science
  • Policies promoting digitalisation in the transformation of regional, national and European economies
  • Instruments of innovation policy for sustainable and inclusive digital transformation (e.g. forecasting, scenarios)
  • Policies that acknowledge new ways to create value, and which effectively support intellectual property rights and intellectual property management
  • Experimentalist innovation policy: promotion of firms’, households’ and regions’ experimentation with digital technologies

The Tenure Track position is research-orientated, but the appointed person will also be expected to acquire external funding, deliver high-quality teaching and theses supervision, actively participate in activities within the scientific community and university administration, as well looking to create societal impact through their work. Duties in teaching and supervision are connected to the degree programmes in Administrative Sciences and the Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences. The scope of responsibilities will be determined according to the career stage of the successful candidate. The annual working time is 1624 hours and tasks are agreed in more detail in the appointed person's Annual Work Plan.

This Tenure Track position in Innovation Policy is located in the School of Management. The tenure holder will carry out research with InnoLab, our multidisciplinary open research platform. It has focus on open and user innovation, entrepreneurship, and public sector innovation and renewal.
