Researcher (Post-Doc), Sino-Finnish Research Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation-project

We are now inviting applications for the position of Researcher (post-doc) in the area of science, technology and innovation policy to a project funded by European Structural Fund Program, entitled “Capacity-Building for Sino-Finnish Research Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation”. The project aims to build up the operating model of the centre energizing the innovation ecosystem of the Vaasa region by fostering regional Sino-Finnish capacity building.


The University of Vaasa cofounded the Sino-Finnish Research Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation (hereafter the Sino-Finnish STI Centre) with the Chinese Academy of Sciences-Institute of Science and Development (CAS-ISD) in 2017. As a strategic initiative at the University of Vaasa, the Sino-Finnish STI centre aims to become an influential think tank supporting policy makers and business in Europe and China by means of conducting policy studies with a living lab approach. We aim to address environmental and societal challenges and promote economic growth by engaging key actors in national/regional innovation ecosystems in knowledge co-creation and innovation.  More information about the Sino-Finnish STI Centre:

This position is located within the School of Technology and Innovations (in the SC-Research team) and the Sino-Finnish STI Centre in Vaasa. The position is fixed-term until 31st of August 2020 and the start date of the employment is 1st of February 2019 or according to negotiation. The employment is subject to a probationary period of 6 months.


The tasks of the post-doc researcher include planning and implementing collaboration activities (seminars, visits, etc.) and research that are based on the “Capacity-building for Sino-Finnish Research Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation” –project. The researcher will also participate in the preparation of future activities (such as project applications) in the Sino-Finnish STI Centre context. The selected candidate will be working in close cooperation with the project leader and other team members, but needs to be able to assume independent responsibility to conduct policy studies and organize international events according to the strategic plan of the Sino-Finnish STI Centre.

All tasks are agreed in more detail in the Annual Work Plan. The annual working time in the position is 1624 hours


Relevant PhD degree is required as well as proven ability to conduct scientific research in the area of innovation management and science, technology and innovation policy as well as other relevant fields (e.g. public management and regional studies). Some track record of international scientific publishing is needed. Active participation in international scientific research networks is also valued.

Communication skills are prerequisites for success in the task: Strong English and Finnish language skills (in particular academic writing skills) are necessary. Knowledge of other languages, Swedish and/or Chinese is useful, but not necessary.


The salary is based on the University Salary System for Teaching and Research Staff. The salary for a Researcher (post-doc) is based on demand level 5 (2903 €/month) and an additional personal salary component is paid based on work performance.
